One of the great things about the American medical system is the ability of physicians and nurses to rise to challenges. Perioperative care is improved so much that now, the sickest are surviving surgery. No matter the care though, one’s chances are always better if a healthy lifestyle is a way of life.
So what chances do the obese have? Say a 380-lb man is involved in a motor vehicle accident and suffers a ruptured spleen. Are his chances of surviving any worse?
Hmm, lets see: probable prolonged extrication because of size, difficulty getting an airway and IV-access because of size plus the length of time it takes to enter his abdomen during a laparatomy. All this time, he is bleeding.
My point is, obesity complicates hospital care like nothing else and the population needs to loose weight for it’s own good. Physicians and nurses are rising to the challenge of the obesity epidemic. Maybe the Obese should meet them halfway – for their own good.
